Opera on the Far Eastern frontiers of the Russian Empire in 1900–1905th.

Abstract

The article examines the features of the cultivation of the opera genre in the Far East of the Russian Empire at the beginning of the twentieth century. In the absence of archival documents, the most valuable source are the materials from local periodicals and the all-Russian magazine “Theatre and Art”. The historical facts are established that deal with the managing the first opera seasons on Russian territory and in 1903 in Harbin. The analysis is carried out on the repertoire of Russian enterprises and the troupe of the Italian opera J. Gonzalez. The most striking reviews of periodicals are given, testifying to the local specifics of the opera perception. Considering opera as a part of the Far Eastern music theatre structure, the author considers it to be an independent genre subsystem, in connection with which its structural elements are revealed. The development of artistic journalism in the region is associated with the cultivation of opera. The periodicals reflected the local features of music and theatre performances, the social context of the opera. There are given the examples of the first publications of the performers’ names in the periodical edition, and also of the appearance of two critics in one edition. The author comes to the conclusion that the performing and entrepreneurial traditions in provincial opera in the Far East were perceived and represented in their already established form in the late 19th – early 20th centuries. The Italian troupe on tour embodied all the problems and features of the provincial opera, which helped it organically enter the space of the domestic provincial music theatre. Reviews of the premieres of Russian operas testified that the Far East is included in the all-Russian area of artistic controversy over events in Russian musical culture.
