Music theatre life of Harbin from 1920s to 1930s: On the materials of the Harbin periodic

Abstract

The musical and theatrical life in Harbin (one of the major centers of theatre culture of the Far East at the beginning of the twentieth century) is a unique page in the history of Russian art. On the basis of a large amount of previously unknown materials from the Harbin periodicals (archive of the Zarya daily newspaper), the article presents the chronograph of the music and theatre groups activities from 1920 to 1931. There is provided some information about the repertoire, actors of troupes, touring activities. Music and theatre life of Harbin in 1920– 1931 was determined by the functioning of the European, as well as the Ukrainian national opera and operetta. It was typical for the pre-revolutionary and pre-war period of the Far Eastern musical theatre. The facts of theatre groups departure outside Manchuria and China are established. Thus significantly increases the area of functioning of the local music theatre. Political processes on Russian / Soviet territory and immanent processes in the theatre business of Harbin itself contributed to its gradual isolation and establishment as an independent music and theatre center of the Far East. This fact was outlined in the second half of the 1920s and finally consolidated by the beginning of the 1930s.
