Elizaveta Svilova in Dziga Vertov ’s archival heritage

Abstract

For the first time, the article introduces one of the unpublished diary fragments of the Soviet documentary filmmaker Dziga Vertov (D. Kaufman) and offers an example of contextual reading of this note. It connects different areas of Vertov’s ego-documentary heritage, as well as his biography and life story of his comrade-in-arms and wife Elizaveta Svilova with the great history of Soviet cinema. On the basis of the archival documents preserved in Dziga Vertov’s Fund in the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, little-known pages of the life of two directors are revealed. Letters, diaries and poems provide an opportunity to look at their creative and personal relationships, illustrate the difficult atmosphere of the 1940s in the country, the situation of persecution in which Svilova and Vertov found themselves at that moment. The author shows that the work of Elizaveta Svilova lacks investigation both in the context of Dziga Vertov’s art and separately from it. Her role in the life and filmography of the world famous cinematographer has been little studied, as well as the significance of her figure in the history of Soviet documentary cinema in general. A new scientific understanding of the relationship between the great married couple who created the “Man with a Movie Camera” is given upon the fundamentally new documents that have not yet been published and have not entered the research circulation.
