Turgenev’s Shakespear. “Neither on the black side, nor on the white”

Abstract

The book of I. Volkov studies the motives of Shakespeare’s tragedies’ — “Hamlet” and “King Lear” — and their influence on the creative works of Ivan Turgenev. The author’s comprehensive analytical approach made it possible to estimate the vast impact of Turgenev’s assessments on the formation of the common cultural and social significance of Shakespeare’s key characters in these plays within the Russian national consciousness. The book successfully combines textological discoveries with a thorough reconstruction of page margins’ logic in Shakespeare's works and studies of these works from Turgenev’s book collection. It also deals with an analysis of Turgenev’s work on translations of Shakespeare’s texts in combination with a retrospective of Turgenev’s studies of the Elizabethan drama. The study also reveals the unique position of Turgenev’s studies of Shakespeare in the context of European reflection on the great British playwright’s drama.
