Young Hopes of Maly Theatre: Vera Pashennaya and Ekaterina Roshchina-Insarova. The Storm by A. Ostrovsky, 1911
Abstract
From the moment of its premiere till the beginning of the 20th century, A.N. Ostrovsky’s The
Storm remained in the Maly Theatre’s repertoire practically without interruption and, in its
own way, became a «concentrate» and at the same time a stronghold of traditions — artistic,
creative, and ideological. In the new 20th century, the theatre is rethinking Ostrovsky: a search
for new content in what is called and revered as a classic play. An example of such a search
for the new content is the revival of The Storm in 1911. The role of Katerina was performed
by two sisters. Vera Pashennaya is a Moscow «school» actress, and a student of A.P. Lensky
Ekaterina Roshchina-Insarova from St. Petersburg. who debuted on the stage of Maly Theatre
as Katerina several months after her sister’s premiere.
The 1911th The Storm fully met the requirements of an actor’s theatre, the type of performance,
where the author both of the dramatic and role content was the actor himself. However, this
authorship itself, directly dependent on the individuality of the actresses, revealed the boundary between the «old» theatre of the 19th century and the «new» one of the 20th century.
Analysis shows that Pashennaya — with all her undoubted acting originality — played the role
of Katerina in a traditional way: a conflict type of contradiction. While Roshchina-Insarova
brought a new worldview on the material of The Storm, which determined the new — modernist — content of the role.
