N.M. Tarabukin on Intérieur and Extérieur as the Forms of Artistic Worldview

Abstract

The article The Problem of Interior and Exterior in Fine Art (1926), published for the first time, is a part of a series of works written by N.M. Tarabukin on the problem of style in painting (articles on landscape, still life, genre and portrait were published in 1927 and 1928). According to the art critic, interior and exterior are two polar forms of expression (like nature vivante and nature morte) of artistic and philosophical worldview. Via them the painter guides the audience in the world of his creative images. In interior, the artist chooses the path of internal immersion in the phenomenon, where the concentric gesture of creativity is affirmed, the centripetal movement of the composition from the periphery to the center is revealed. Exterior is the path of external revelation of the phenomenon in an expanded action, an eccentric gesture of creativity, unfolding the plot along the outer axis moving from the center to the periphery. These two forms — interior and exterior — are characterized by two predominant forms of embodiment: easel painting and decorative painting. Considering the artist's work as a whole, one can also attribute his art predominantly to one or the other type of orientation. Generalizing even more broadly, one can speak of the “coloring” of an entire era in the sense of interior or exterior expression of worldview. Moreover, entire cultures can be characterized according to one or another artistic worldview. From the point of view of the connection between art and philosophy, the interior form of orientation can be compared with idealistic philosophical systems, while the exterior with sensualistic ones, and the still life with materialistic ones.
