Maly Theatre in the Era of Directing: Paradoxes of Formation and Development

Abstract

The article is based on the report “Maly Theatre in the era of directing”, made by the author at the International Scientific Conference “Maly Theatre. The Great Story” (SAMT of Russia, GITIS, October 24–25, 2024). In accordance to the point of view accepted in theatre studies, Maly Theatre is considered by the author as predominantly “actors’ one”. In the field of attention is the difficult path of actors from the complete denial of directing to the recognition of its necessity and its acceptance as a special type of theatre thinking and creative project. The role of A.I. Yuzhin in this process and the significance of his activities as the head of the theatre is revealed. Artistic directors, directors and chief directors are characterized as followers of his creative management strategy. The problem of the creative sovereignty of the director stands out as a key one for the creative and organizational model of this theatre. One of the options for its successful resolution can be considered the phenomenon of “actor’s direction” born in the bowels of the theatre. As an alternative to the controversial model of turning Maly into a “theatre of acting egoisms”, examples of significant performances staged by full-time and guest production directors on the oldest Moscow stage are given.
