The Garden as an Art Space and a Territory of Memory
Abstract
On October 4, 2024 a new space was opened in the Suzdal Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery, a
monument of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve. The museum presented the Garden, laid
out on the site of the walking yard of the Prisoner Corps.
The arrangement of this place is the first stage of the re-exposition of the old prison complex,
which functioned within these walls until the 1960s. The article analyzes the concept of the
project, designed to rearrange the territory burdened with tragic connotations into a living
museum ensemble, suggesting the possibility of arranging art exhibitions while respectfully
preserving the historical memory of this place. The experience of the first action shows: a
successfully found “Key” made it possible to solve this difficult task. The “Key” is the Garden
itself. Due to the breadth of the semantic field of the garden theme in European culture, the
garden as a form and as an image turned out to be in demand in modern museum practice.
In this case, it successfully combines two of its many meanings — the space of memory and
the space of creation.
