Alexander Ryaposov’s “Non-heroic Hero”: A Book about Mark Zakharov
Abstract
The article focuses on the monograph of the Doctor of Art History, Professor of the Department
of History of the Russian Theatre in Russian State Institutе of Performing Arts, head of the sector
of source studies of the Russian Institute of Art History A.Yu. Ryaposov Theatre and TV-theatre
by Mark Zakharov. It was released in 2024 and presents a successful attempt of a deep study
of the theatre and screen works of one of the brightest and most talented directors of Russian
theatre of the second half of the 20 — early 21st centuries. One of the main qualities of the
work is the utmost concentration on the very process of the director's professional activities
both in the theatre and on television, during several periods of national history— Soviet epoch,
Perestroika, and Russian period of national history. At the same time, the book uses rather
unusual technique of “internal dialogue” (the term of Vs. Meyerhold) which means a contact
interface, the basic positions of the author’s concept with opinions and reviews of Zakharov’s
performances and films by famous theatre critics and scholars. The dramaturgy of the study is
moving from the stunningly successful works of the 1970s — 1980s to the latest and extremely
controversial productions of the legendary leader of Lenkom, which are still at the background
of his creative legacy. It allows the author to outline the basic principles and structure of the
director’s methodology.
Thus the purpose of this article is to present and give an objective assessment of A.Y. Ryaposov’s
monograph, which organically fits and correlates with his author’s concept of the evolution of
Russian directing of the 20–21st centuries.
