Heirs and Heritage: The Maly Theatre in the Materials of the Theatre Digest of 1944 and Theatre Journal of 1945–1946
Abstract
The article is based on the reviewing the materials from archival issues of the Theatre journal
in the early post-war period (the second half of 1945–the first half of 1946). It aims in clearly
showing that this historical period, this period of publication's work, deserves a separate detailed study. The research also focuses on the “deputy” of the Theatre journal during the Great
Patriotic War, a collection of articles and materials of the same name (1944), which in 1943
was conceived by the scientific and creative department of the Russian Theatrical Society as
a periodical. The article contains excerpts from the transcript of the meeting to discuss this digest
in 1944, from the funds of the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art.
The features of the discussions about the theatre directions are considered in the context of
historical events and using the example of materials about the Maly Theatre. During this period,
on the pages of the printed media, as well as in the transcripts of meetings devoted to discussing
their work, the changes that were emerging in the public consciousness were recorded. The
authors' statements about pressing issues (related to the state plan and other consequences of
the centralization of the 1930s) often seemed rather critical. In this case, it proves the confusion
of theatre practitioners, which can be traced in their polemics. ThusN. V. Petrov in his article
Heirs and Heritage (1944) begins a conversation about current problems: a small number of
productions (the same as in the cinema sphere), the absence of new roles for leading actors,
the substitution of directing for pedagogy, etc. Theatre figures try to “sort out” (or report) on
these issues in post-war publications; the Maly Theatre also “held the answer”. The polemics
allows to trace the tendencies of general theatre processes in 1944–1946.
