A Sensual Scalpel. The House with a Turret: an Unrealized Screenplay by Fridrikh Gorenshtein and Andrei Tarkovsky

Abstract

The article presents materials from the production file of Fridrikh Gorenshtein’s unproduced feature-length screenplay “The House with a Turret”, which was planned as Andrei Tarkovsky’s third film. Gorenshtein’s treatment from the collection of the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art is published for the first time and gives an insight into how the aspiring screenwriter’s idea changed under the pressure of the circumstances of film production, in particular, due to the advice, recommendations, and demands placed on it by the members of the editorial board and the Artistic Council of the Mosfilm Studios’ Creative Association of Writers and Filmmakers. Thanks to the surviving transcripts of discussions of the screenplay “The House with a Turret”, as well as official documents, one can understand what drew Tarkovsky to Gorenshtein’s story and what became the reason for the beginning of their creative collaboration.
