United are the Film and Music. The Actor’s Song in the Destiny of Dmitry Kharatyan

Abstract

The article examines the phenomenon of vocal performances by the People’s Artist of Russia, theatre and film actor Dmitry Kharatyan. Having been receptive to music since childhood, Kharatyan made his film debut in a role which required singing and guitar playing skills. The talent of the young singing actor was revealed in the film The Green Van with songs by M. Dunaevsky onto the words by N. Olev. After the release of the successful TV series Gardesmarines, Forward! Kharatyan became the most famous singing actor in Russia. A special milestone in his life was his work with outstanding film directors Marlen Khutsiev and Leonid Gaidai, who discovered in his acting nature a special combination of youthful eccentricity and sincerity of intonation — poetic and musical, reflected both in the screen and in the diverse variety of D. Kharatyan's entertaining work. The actor's on-screen and stage talent is inseparable from his unique image as a dramatic actor, singer and reader, whose style was influenced by M. Dunaevsky, V. Lebedev, B. Okudzhava and I. Schwartz. Acting talent helps Kharatyan to create a complete artistic image in the song, which is based on a trusting intonation, mood and dramaturgy. The conclusion is made that the semantic content of the soundtrack of the film results from an equal importance of music and words. Stylistically, Dmitry Kharatyan is inclined towards pop music, but he successfully experiments with the academic genre as well, revealing new aspects of his talent. The article is dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the People's Artist of Russia Dmitry Kharatyan.
