“The Second Debut that Also Never Happened”: the Censorship History of the Film I Accept the Challenge by S.G. Mikaelyan

Abstract

The article examines the censorship history of the full-length feature film I Accept the Challenge, the second director’s work by S.G. Mikaelyan, based on a screenplay by A.Ya. Kapler and produced at the Lenfilm Studio. Drawing on previously unpublished archival documents and memoirs, the study traces the creation process of the film (initially titled Dreamers) from the development of its literary script (1961) to the issuance of its distribution permit (1965), identifying five distinct editorial versions of the film. Each version was shaped by censorship demands imposed by various Soviet authorities. The first three versions (1962–1963) re - mained preliminary, as they were rejected by studio management or higher authorities. The fourth version (1963) was shelved by Goskino USSR but later unshelved in 1965, after which censorship-mandated revisions were implemented. The fifth and final version was released in 1966. The study analyzes the reasons behind the censorship interventions, the specific demands levied by Soviet film officials, and the concrete amendments dictated by censors. By reconstructing the production stages of the film, the article illuminates the circumstances that positioned I Accept the Challenge as the first in a wave of films shelved during the 1960s and one of the rare Soviet-era works to be unshelved prior to Gorbachev’s perestroika.
