Around the Thaw. Tabakov, Efros, and Others in New Scientific Interpretations
Abstract
This article examines the creative legacy of the outstanding actor and director Oleg Tabakov
within the context of the 2025 commemorative events marking his 90th birth anniversary and
the 100th anniversary of Anatoly Efros. The author analyzes a series of major exhibitions in
Moscow and Saratov, as well as the All-Russian research-to-practice conference “The Old
New Sincerity: Oleg Tabakov on Screen”, which served as platforms for a comprehensive
analysis of the artist’s heritage. The study focuses on the multifaceted nature of Tabakov’s
talent: his evolution from a theatrical innovator and founder of his own studio to a key figure in
Russian cinema and animation. Drawing on conference proceedings and exhibition materials,
the article demonstrates how Tabakov’s work reflects the shifting cultural epochs and value systems of Soviet and Russian society. Particular attention is paid to the synthesis of Stanislavsky’s
theatrical system with screen expressiveness, as well as to Tabakov’s unique pedagogical gift,
which nurtured a generation of renowned actors. The research underscores the necessity for
further systematic study of Oleg Tabakov’s role as an integrative figure who united theatre,
cinema, television, and animation in his art. It also highlights the importance of monographic
conferences and collective scholarly volumes for studying the creative heritage of prominent
figures of the Russian theatrical school.
