Alexander Ostrovsky's Plays as a Verbatim Theatre of the 19th Century. Mainstreaming and Tradition

Abstract

The International Scholar Conference A.N. Ostrovsky. Talent and Society that was held in GITIS was the part of Ostrovsky's anniversary year events. There was a discussion about stage interpretations of the author's plays at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The directors of different generations took part in this venue: those who staged Ostrovsky at the head Russian theatres, on the student stage, local and abroad. An enormous collection of plays written by the great Russian playwright is a real universe. They make it possible to understand the universality of social problems, become an ideal space for creative dialogue and for the actor’s self-identification, stimulate pedagogical experiments, and allow one to feel the connection of times in the relevance of the conflicts outlined in the plays.
