About Pavel Markov: Art Historian and Critic, Theorist and Practitioner of Theatre

Abstract

Pavel Markov is a unique phenomenon of a theatre historian, who was both a theatre critic, an active participant of all the theatre events, a historian and a theatre theorist. He was especially interested in two epochs: the time before the Maly Theatre and the Alexandrinsky Theatre during the period of liberal reforms. Markov is a philologist and the author of articles about such Russian playwrights as A. Ostrovsky, N. Nekrasov, A. Sukhovo-Kobylin, M. Bulgakov, L. Leonov. The article Fixing Acting clearly reveals his talent as a theorist. To understand his place in theatre studies and his individuality, it is important to note that he, being carried away by modern theatre, perceived the theatre process as something unified — a movement, a flow. He looked at this process from the point of view that Bakhtin called “extra-locality”. For Markov, it was extremely important to understand the place of all the participants in the theatre process in terms of history. He always treated any new phenomenon in the history of culture, art, and thought with an interest. Markov is the author of many works about outstanding contemporaries, including actors Fedotova, Ermolova, Leshkovskaya, Davydov, Yuzhin and many others. He was a younger contemporary of Mikhail Chekhov and Alisa Koonen. He was familiar with Kachalov, Berdyaev and Vyacheslav Ivanov. He met Stanislavsky, NemirovichDanchenko, Meyerhold, Tovstonogov, Lyubimov, Efros, Efremov, Vakhtangov, Tairov. He saw the debuts of Fomenko and Fokin, along with the first performances of Anatoly Vasiliev. His experience of theatre studies and his works, that firstly appeared more than a century ago, are much valuable nowadays.
