Spoken Word in M. S. Shchepkin’s Art Work

Abstract

It is generally accepted in the theatre community that the genre of the artistic expression appeared at the turn of the 19th — 20th centuries. It was first mentioned by A. Ya. Zakushnyak. The article puts forward the thesis that M. S. Shchepkin should be considered the founder of the genre of the artistic expression.

Based on the memories and reflections on the nature of the sounding word of the wellknown masters of the genre, such as A. Ya. Zakushnyak, D. N. Zhuravlev, Ya. M. Smolensky, criteria are formulated that allow certain performances to be attributed to the genre of the artistic expression. Using these criteria and basing on the historical facts (Shchepkin's reciter’s repertoire studied from reviews, letters and memoirs, a detailed description of the actor's performances) the author comes to the conclusion that M. S. Shchepkin's reading performances can be attributed to the genre of artistic expression.

An attempt has been made to trace the evolution of Shchepkin as the reciter and identify the stages of his development: formation of aesthetic views; practice of the improvisational storytelling; the increasing of the reciter’s repertoire as a result of the appearance of literary works of a “large scale”.

The author examines the process of the actor's working on the text, the factors that contributed to Shchepkin's formation of new acting techniques. In particular, the influence of the author's language and the personality of N. V. Gogol is analyzed. The article examines how the actor's moral ideals were reflected in Shchepkin’s reciting repertoire.
